Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar was the butt of a racist, Islamophobic backpack bomb joke told by Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert.
Omar brought a bill to make combat Islamophobic ideas and jokes. Studies Omar cited in the legislation show acceptance and normalizing Islamophobic behavior leads to a decay of civility in society. Harsh antidemocratic measures and general thug and fascist style laws follow the normalization of Islamophobia.
A rare show of American lawmaking to stop the decay of society, the representatives are elected to make laws and govern. A law that prohibits others from taking away one the original rights of the Bill or Rights is not a good thing? Civility has not been an American principle since Trump, so I can see how the GOP might not think demeaning or sneering one’s religion is a bad thing.
I remember once when lawmakers held the original “enabling rights” were sacrosanct and unquestioned.
The current Trump Personality Cult Party, or the “Republican Party”/“GOP,” care not for civility or laws.
