As Russia invades Ukraine, I can’t help but see that the “west” has become more united than ever. Where COVID brought social distancing blockades and travel bans. Putin’s zeal for reforming the old Soviet Union’s East Europe satellite states seems to force western Europe and the whole western hemisphere against his war.

Not since World War II and Germany and Hitler has one man and his national army made Allies out of the simple want for a people to self-govern. The apparent plan was to take the capital Kyiv in hours and install a puppet president as Putin had before. Talk and the prevailing thought is Putin made the Russians believe that the invading Russian army would be welcomed as they marched in.

The people of Ukraine did not welcome them. Instead, they took up arms and defended their democracy.

Now, their stated mission is to expel the Russians and maintain the democracy they made after the 2014 “Orange Revolution” ousting of the Russia friendly president by demonstration and protest.

Uniting NATO and making all have a new respect for democracy was not the aim of Putin.

The Russian ruble has crashed, their stock market is closed, and Putin looks like the power drunk isolated failed dictator he is.
