This first Christmas without mom will be a look at what this day will be for the rest of our lives. The only difference will be when Fatema is here after next year we hope. Yes, her and I are Muslims and don’t celebrate the day by rule, but some family traditions will supersede that here.

No disrespect to conservative by Muslims, still we have love in our hearts as a family and Allah had never been against love and family. Being an “Americanized” Muslim is a putdown in many traditionalists’ eyes. I AM an American and will always be an Americanized Muslim by birth and chances of geographic lottery.

Traditions will be celebrated, and fun will be had, as we revel in the family time as we did before with mom. The pain is less, and I am sure that it will fail up at times when thoughts of Mom are unavoidable.

Healing our hearts will take time and never be fully healed as the place that was Mom’s will be hollow always.

I am assured and I trust that it will get better with time, as all hurts do.

So, happy holidays, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Festivus to everyone!
